1902 /2009

100% Carignane planted in 1902. Purple and depth. Just 3 barrels. Numbered bottles. Priorat embedded.

FEATURES:

  • GRAPE VARIETIES: 100% Carignane planted in 1.902. Centenary Carignane
  • ALCOHOLIC CONTENT: 15%
  • SOILS & VINES: Vineyards are situated at a height of 350/500 meters above sea level on hillsides of pronounced slopes, with the characteristic slate soil called "licorella". The grapes come from vines planted in 1.902 just after the philloxera. Very low yiels: 300 gr per vine.
  • VINTAGE AND CLIMATE: A year of extremes! Very cold and snowy winter, rainy spring and very hot summer, dry and extreme.  Temperatures moderated in September with some rain that allowed a very good maturation with harvest in October.
  • AGEING: The elaboration process followed temperature-controlled fermentation with a total maceration period of about 4/5 weeks what allowed a progressive and excellent extraction. The ageing was of 16 months in new French oak.

Jancis Robinson - February 2016 - Ferran Centelles - 19pts

First vintage of this very limited cuvée. Just 850 bottles. Pre-phylloxera vines yielding less than 300 grams per vine. Submerged-cap fermentation. 16 months' ageing in used French oak.

The nose has everything and is really refined, vivid expression, spiciness, mineral character, touch of violets, ginger and ripe blackcurrant. Deep and dynamic nose. The palate combines freshness and delicacy with concentration. Very smooth and integrated tannins of great texture. Lighter in body than the average of the region but with extra concentration. Winemaking touches perfection in this wine. I feel moved by this glass of wine, I love this game. Drink 2016-2026.

Wine Spectator #Sept. 30, 2015 - A history of Priorat in 12 bottles

The 2009 vintage was hot, and many of the wines are thick and a bit tough. The 1902, however, has great depth and no rough edges, despite its 15 degrees of alcohol. The wine shows ripe plum and cassis fruit, with a meaty note characteristic of Cariñena, backed by mineral and garrigue .

Wine Advocate #219 - June 2015 - Luis Gutiérrez - 97pts

The extremely powerful, concentrated and rich 2009 1902 is named after the vintage when the centenary Cariñena vines were planted. They have been making small lots of this wine since 2004, but the 2009 is the first commercial release. Cariñena takes heat very well (2009 was certainly hot) and produces very powerful and concentrated wines. This has the character and rusticity of the Priorats from the 1990s and the finesse, elegance of the know-how acquired with years of experience. Wet slate, esparto grass, black cherries, damsons, clove, nutmeg, violets and loads of earthy aromas and flavors define this huge wine that will age forever and please the fans of powerful, concentrated reds. Very poetically, they define these vines as wise vines instead of old vines. Sadly only 850 bottles were produced, and the price reflects this scarcity. This makes the 2012 Doix seem light!

Vinologue Priorat - Miquel Hudin - May 2015 - ***pts

Selected from the three best barrels of their Doix with only 850 bottles made. Aromas of cocoa powder, orange peel, chocolate, and forest floor. Rich in the mouth and full with bold tannins, yet still elegant and fresh.

Wineonsix.com - April 8, 2015 - Miquel Hudin

Aromas of cocoa powder, orange peel, chocolate, and forest floor. Rich in the mouth and full with bold tannins, yet still elegant and fresh. A marvelous selection of an already marvelous wine.

Vinous - Sept 2014 - Josh Raynolds  - 93pts

Glass-staining ruby. Deeply pitched aromas of cherry liqueur, cassis, singed plum and woodsmoke, with a suave floral quality adding vibrancy and lift. Offers palate-coating dark fruit flavors and hints of licorice and candied flowers, along with a touch of fruitcake. Broader-shouldered and more densely packed than the 2010 rendition, finishing with strong thrust and velvety yet gripping tannins. These vines were planted in, surprisingly enough, 1902.

Guía Peñín 2015 - 96pts

Intense cherry in color. Expressive aroma with character, mineral, earthy. Palate: tasty, powerful, bitter notes, good acidity, round.

Cellar Tracker - Yagil - October 25, 2013 - 97pts
