1902 /2012

Centenary Carignan. Purity, depth and freshness.

  • GRAPE VARIETIES: 100% Carignan planted in 1.902. Centenary Carignan.
  • SOILS & VINES: Vineyards are situated at a height of 350/500 meters above sea level on hillsides of pronounced slopes, with the characteristic slate soil called "licorella". The grapes come from vines planted in 1.902 just after the philloxera. Very low yiels: 300 gr per vine.
  • VINTAGE AND CLIMATE: It is said to be one of the best vintages in the Priorat in the last 10 years. A very dry year from November to August with very slow growth of the grapes. Hot summer just refreshing with rain at the beginning of September. Harvest at mid September fresh and quiet.
  • AGEING: The elaboration process followed temperature-controlled fermentation with a total maceration period of about 4/5 weeks what allowed a progressive and excellent extraction. The ageing was of 16 months in new French oak.

The Wine Advocate #227 - Oct. 2016 – 97pts

To catch up with what’s being currently released I also tasted the 2012 1902, a wine from Cariñena vines planted in 1902 that is not produced every year (so far only 2009, 2010 and 2012 exist). After fermenting in stainless steel, the wine matured in brand new French oak barrels for 16 months and was bottled in April 2014. It's still a baby, and it's a little closed and in need of some time in bottle to unfurl all it has inside. There is a combination of violets, scorched earth, spices, Mediterranean herbs, peat and dark cherries. The palate is not as concentrated as you might expect, and it shows great elegance, freshness and balance. It's amazing what old Cariñena can deliver. It should age into a really beautiful swan . These low yielding vines produced 850 numbered bottles in the dry and warm 2012 vintage.

Wine Spectator – October 2016 - 93pts

This aromatic red is rich with smoke and mineral notes that follow through on the palate, deepened by cranberry, tar and mountain herb flavours. The dense texture is balanced and graceful. Drink now through 2022.

Guía Peñín 2017 - Podium 96pts

An intense cherry colour with violet-shaded rim. Aroma with character, complex, powerful, mountain herbs. Round in the mouth, full, powerful, ripe tannins.

Elmundovino.com -   4.06.2016 - 18.50/20pts

Still closed in the nose, with clove, pipe tobacco and slate. Very elegant, with a silky texture and extreme finesse. Tasty, yet fruity, but with the mineral notes to sharpen and prolong it.
