1902 /2013

Centenary Carignan. Purity, depth and freshness.

  • GRAPE VARIETIES: 100% Carignan planted in 1.902. Centenary Carignan.
  • SOILS & VINES: Vineyards are situated at a height of 350/500 meters above sea level on hillsides of pronounced slopes, with the characteristic slate soil called "licorella". The grapes come from vines planted in 1.902 just after the philloxera. Very low yiels: 300 gr per vine.
  • VINTAGE AND CLIMATE: Great vintage. Temperatures lower than usual and rainy spring. Dry and hot summer and autumn. Harvest made two weeks later than usual, with very good balance between sugar, acidity and phenolic maturity. Hand harvested in boxes of 10 kg. Classification grain by grain double sorting table.
  • AGEING: The elaboration process followed temperature-controlled fermentation with a total maceration period of about 4/5 weeks what allowed a progressive and excellent extraction. The ageing was of 16 months in new French oak.

The Wine Advocate #236 - Apr. 2018 – 97pts

The oldest of the three years I tasted side by side of the centenary Cariñena, the 2013 1902 Centenary Carignan is from a great vintage that has produced many of Priorat's greatest wines to date. It was a cooler year with more rain than usual and a late, very balanced harvest. The grapes come exclusively from vines planted in 1902 (after phylloxera) on slate slopes, called costers; the grapes were hand harvested two weeks later than average and then destemmed and selected in the winery where it fermented in stainless steel with neutral yeasts. It matured in new French barrique for 16 months. I was instantly seduced by the expressive nose, denoting great freshness and depth, with notes of beef blood and iron; it's wide and long, concentrated but nicely balanced in a powerful way, showing huge personality and Priorat character. It seems to have all the ingredients for a very long development in bottle to become a legendary Cariñena, but the fast evolution once the bottle was opened made me hesitate a bit. 980 numbered bottles were filled in April 2015.
