1903 /2015

Centenary Grenache. Delicacy. Depth. Freshness.

  • GRAPE VARIETIES: 100% Grenache planted since 1.903. Centenary Grenache.
  • SOILS & VINES: Vineyards are situated at a height of 350/500 meters above sea level on hillsides of pronounced slopes, with the characteristic slate soil called "llicorella". The grapes come from vines planted in 1.903 just after the philloxera. Very low yiels: 300 gr per vine.
  • VINTAGE AND CLIMATE: Mild winter with timely snowfall in February. Spring with little rain and high average temperatures. 60 l./m2 fallen in June allow us to face a heatwave in July and more temperate and dry August and
September. Harvest from 15 September to 25 October. Slowly but surely. A quiet and very good harvest.
  • AGEING: The elaboration process followed temperature-controlled fermentation with a total maceration period of about 4/5 weeks what allowed a progressive and excellent extraction. The ageing was of 16 months in new French oak.

The Wine Advocate #236 - Apr.2018 - 95 pts.

A few years after releasing the centenary Carignan wine, they de-cided to bottle a 2015 1903 Centenary Grenache, with a similar approach and philosophy. The grapes are sourced from their ol-dest family vineyards in the village of Poboleda, basically from two vineyards where they have both Garnacha and Cariñena; but theywere picked, fermented and sged separately. The 2015 vintage isnot an easy one, perhaps a little too dry and ripe for Garnachabut better for Cariñena; the wine shows high ripeness and is abit jammy on the nose, with better balance in the palate, where itshows good balance and freshness. It’s a bit of a heady Garnacha,an intoxicating wine, showy, open, expressive and impressive. The destemmed grapes fermented in stainless steel, and wine matu-red in new and used 225 and 500 liter barrels to complete some 16 months of aging. 600 bottles were filled in May 2017. This will be released in 2018. I cannot wait to taste future vintages, espe-cially from slightly cooler years.
