1903 /2016

Centenary Grenache. Delicacy. Depth. Freshness.

  • GRAPE VARIETIES: 100% Grenache planted since 1.903. Centenary Grenache.
  • SOILS & VINES: Vineyards are situated at a height of 350/500 meters above sea level on hillsides of pronounced slopes, with the characteristic slate soil called "llicorella". The grapes come from vines planted in 1.903 just after the philloxera. Very low yiels: 300 gr per vine.
  • VINTAGE AND CLIMATE: Small and healthy grapes because of one of the driest summers we have ever had. Moderate temperatures in average with small rains in September gave us one of the quietest and longest harvest in years. Very good ripening and well kept acidity. A vintage that will make a difference.
  • AGEING: The elaboration process followed temperature-controlled fermentation with a total maceration period of about 4/5 weeks what allowed a progressive and excellent extraction. The ageing was of 16 months in new French oak.

The Wine Advocate #244 - Aug. 2019 – 96pts

The 2016 1903 Centenary Grenache was produced with grapes sourced from their oldest family vineyards in the village of Po-boleda. 2016 delivered small and healthy grapes with good ripe-ness and acidity. In fact, the acidity feels quite concentrated, gi-ving a vibrant sensation on the palate. I think 2016 was better for Garnacha than 2015, and the wine is aromatic and harmonious, with contained ripeness (despite the 15% alcohol). Even if aged inbrand new French oak barrels, the wine does not come through
as oaky, as the fruit has the intensity and depth to take such ex-treme élevage. Only 398 bottles were produced in 2016.
