Doix /2015

Elegance and complexity, exclusive and strong personality; very limited production.

  • GRAPE VARIETIES: 55% Carignan and 45% Grenache
  • SOILS & VINES: Doix estate vineyards are situated at a height of 350/500 meters above sea level on hillsides of pronounced slopes, with the characteristic slate soil called "licorella". The grapes come from vines between 80 and 105 years old, with a small but exceptional average production of 400 gr per vine.
  • VINTAGE AND CLIMATE: Mild winter with timely snowfall in February. Spring with little rain and high average temperatures. 60 l./m2 fallen in June allow us to face a heatwave in July and more temperate and dry August and September. Harvest from 15 September to 25 October. Slowly but surely. A quiet and very good harvest.
  • AGEING: The elaboration process followed temperature-controlled fermentation with a total maceration period of about 4/5 weeks what allowed a progressive and excellent extraction. The ageing was of 16 months in new French oak.

The 2015 Doix Costers De Vinyes Velles comes from 55% old vine Carignan (110-year-old vines) and 45% Grenache (85-year-old vines) and was raised all in new French oak. A rich, concentrated, incredibly impressive Priorat, it has that classic smoky minerality as well as brilliant notes of plums, violets, graphite, roasted herbs, and chocolate. Full-bodied, deep, and incredibly concentrated, it stays balanced and pure, with a great finish. It might end up being one of the legendary Priorats out there.

The Wine Advocate #236 - Apr. 2018 – 94pts – Luis Gutiérrez

Certainly riper and with a little less acidity, the 2015 Doix Costers de Vinyes Velles is a similar blend of 55% extremely old Cariñena and 45% very old Garnacha matured in new French oak barrels for 16 months. The fruit is black, and the palate reveals abundant, fine-grained tannins and integrated acidity. A powerful vintage for Doix. Bottles were filled in March 2017.
