Doix /2005

Elegance and complexity, exclusive and strong personality; very limited production.

  • GRAPE VARIETIES: 48% Grenache, 50% Carignan, 2% Merlot.
  • SOILS & VINES: Doix estate vineyards are situated at a height of 350/500 meters above sea level on hillsides of pronounced slopes, with the characteristic slate soil called "licorella". The grapes come from vines between 80 and 105 years old, with a small but exceptional average production of 400 gr per vine.
  • VINTAGE AND CLIMATE: The 2005 vintage had a long and cold winter, with snow falling on February 22nd and March 3rd, causing some delay in the growing season. During Spring, like the winter, we had very little rain, so resulted a very dry year. The summer gave mild temperatures and early September, 6th and 7th we received some beneficial rains that favoured the final stage of maturation. In summary, the 2005 is an extraordinary vintage, with nice concentration and a great acidity, which gives us deep and long wines.
  • AGEING: The elaboration process followed temperature-controlled fermentation with a total maceration period of about 5 weeks. The ageing was of 16 months in new French oak.

Wine Advocate #175-Feb 2008-Jay Miller- 98pts

The 2005 Costers de Vinas Viejas is aged for 16 months in new French oak. The wine is a blend of 50% Carinena, 48% Garnacha, and 2% Merlot. Purple-colored, it has an other-worldly perfume of pain grille, grilled meat, spice cabinet, espresso, mineral, wild blueberry, and black cherry. This is followed by a powerful, masculine, intense Priorat with gobs of flavor, 8-10 years of cellaring potential, and a very long finish. It will be at its peak from 2018 to 2040. Drink: 2018 - 2040.

Vinous – Sep. 2007 – Josh Raynolds  – 92pts

Inky violet. Vibrant cherry, cassis and violet aromas are deepened by smoky bacon, mocha and toasty oak. Tightly wound, with firmly structured dark berry flavors and no flab. Picks up a spicy quality on the impressively long, juicy finish, which offers an intriguing, rooty cola flavor.
