Doix /2014

Elegance and complexity, exclusive and strong personality; very limited production.

  • GRAPE VARIETIES: 55% Carignan and 45% Grenache
  • SOILS & VINES: Doix estate vineyards are situated at a height of 350/500 meters above sea level on hillsides of pronounced slopes, with the characteristic slate soil called "licorella". The grapes come from vines between 80 and 105 years old, with a small but exceptional average production of 400 gr per vine.
  • VINTAGE AND CLIMATE: A good vintage, without lack of rain, mild temperatures and the typical dry summer. A warm and rainy September made the harvest complex and required a large selection of grapes, which came with a good tannic structure, concentration of flavors and very refreshing acidity.
  • AGEING: The elaboration process followed temperature-controlled fermentation with a total maceration period of about 4/5 weeks what allowed a progressive and excellent extraction. The ageing was of 16 months in new French oak.

Silver Vinari Prize 2018 DOQ Priorat

Jancis Robinson - Ferran Centelles – June 2018 - 18.5pts

Superb fruit stuff! Dense, rich and opulent small berries. Extremely promising wine on the aromatics: fleshy and delicious fruit. Impressive intensity with a cutting salty acidity. Deep and showing layers and layers of fruit. (FC)14.5% Drink 2017-2024.

Carinyena (Carignan) and 80-year-old Garnatxa (Grenache) planted in the characteristic llicorella slate terraces of Priorat, elevation ranges between 350 m and 500 m. Organic, yields are limited to 300 grams/vine. Hand-harvested grapes were picked in the vineyard followed by a second selection on a double sorting table. 100% destemmed, fermentation in stainless-steel tanks of 1,500 and 2,000 kg. 24-day maceration, using submerged cap system in order to minimise the risk of oxidation for a smoother extraction. Aged in fine-grain new French oak barrels for 14–16 months. No fining, unfiltered. Moderate production of 5,000 bottles. Tasted blind.

Jancis Robinson - May 2018 – 17pts

Dark crimson. Complex smoky minerals on the nose. Warm and molten! Old vines and lots of terroir powdered into this glass. Manages not to be too heay. Dry end. Lots to lick on - really is like sucking a stone. 14.5%. Drink 2018-2025.

The Wine Advocate #236 - Apr. 2018 – 95pts

I had two vintages of the old-vine cuvée to taste side by side, starting with the 2014 Doix Costers de Vinyes Velles. Made of 55% Cariñena and 45% Garnacha from old vines on slopes on slate llicorella soils, the fermentation and aging are the same as for the centenary Carignan: fermentation in stainless steel with neutral yeasts and an élevage of 16 months in new French barriques. It has moderate alcohol and high acidity. It has already started developing some tertiary notes and shows some graphite and wet slate notes. The palate shows great balance, with concentration and freshness—what you're aiming for in a wine like this where pure power might be too much. 5,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2016.

Jeb Dunnuck - February 22nd 2018   - 96pts

Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a beautiful perfume of blueberries, violets, graphite, lead pencil and iris flower. Just insanely pure, perfumed and complex, with full-bodied richness, this beauty glides across the palate with no weight, incredible tannin quality, no hard edges, and beautiful purity. While this cuvée used to be richer and slightly more concentrated, it’s more elegant, pure, and seamless today, without sacrificing intensity.

Guía Peñín 2018   - 94pts

Color: cherry, maroon rim. Aroma: powerful, candied fruit, mountain herbs, fine cocoa. Palate: balanced, full, tasty, structured.

Tony Aspler – Ontario – March 2018 - 92pts

Priorat – 55% Carignan, 45% Grenache – 16 months in new French oak: deep ruby-purple in colour; spicy, vanilla oak with brambleberry fruit and a cedary note on the nose; full-bodied (14.5% alc.), dry, richly extracted with a herb-tinged blackberry note.

Tasting note - Wein & Wissen - Peer F. Holm

Tension of dark fruit like plum and mineral slate spicy paired with smoky notes like smoked bacon. Juicy cherry fruit, vital acid, fine-grained tannins. Still at the beginning of his development.
