Les Crestes /2016

Fruity, fresh and expressive. A genuine young and delicious Priorat wine.

  • GRAPE VARIETIES: 20-year-old Red Grenache vines (80%), old Carignan (10%) and Syrah (10%).
  • SOILS & VINES: Grapes grown exclusively on steep slate “licorella” hillsides (350/450 m.) with yields of 1kg / vine.
  • VINTAGE AND CLIMATE: Small and healthy grapes because of one of the driest summers we have ever had. Moderate temperatures in average with small rains in September gave us one of the quietest and longest harvest in years. Very good ripening and well kept acidity. A vintage that will make a difference.
  • AGEING: Grapes picked by hand using 10 kg. boxes. Selection in vineyards and at the entrance of the winery. Classification berry by berry on a double sorting table in the winery. Aging of 8 months in second year French oak barrels.

Grapes from younger vines are used for the 2016 Les Crestes, which is also released earlier. It's a blend of Garnacha with 20% Cariñena and 10% Syrah matured in second use French oak barrels for eight months. 2016 was a dry growing season saved by a cooler September with some rain, which resulted in a relaxed and long harvest of grapes with good ripeness and acidity. It's young, tender and aromatic, a gentle Priorat with a juicy palate and a fresh personality. Really attractive and pleasant. 48,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2017.

Outstanding notes of black cherries, blackberries, graphite, lead pencil shavings, violets and beautiful minerality all emerge from the glass and this beauty is ripe, plump, rounded, and incredibly textured on the palate, with sweet tannin. It’s a beautifully pure, sexy, little fruit bomb to drink over the coming 4-5 years.

Color: cherry, violet rim. Aroma: red fruit, ripe fruit, floral, herbs of the mountain, mineral. Palate: balanced, structured, tasty.

Demos Bertran - Tasting note

Intense purplish red, cardinal crimson rim with a thickly tinted tear that flows throughout the glass.

In the nose is pure fresh fruit with a few berries of the forest in which red mulberries and red cranberries predominate, blackberries and blackcurrants appear, their liquorous touch with remembrances of redcurrant liquor enhances the great freshness of the fruit, fresh balsamic with liquorice stick and light mint, mountain herbs with a touch of fresh thyme and a subtle tint of fresh licorella stone background that brings an extra final freshness.

On the palate it has a soft and juicy entrance with a marked and firm astringency, light and with nerve in its light route, crunchy fruits of the forest, very tasty, that dominates again with the red cranberries and the black currants, very good acidity that accentuates the direct and vertical profile in its course, vibrant tannins, intense and good persistence.

Long finish with a liqueur aftertaste with touches of red fruit and balsamic retronasal.

A vintage full of freshness. A bottle to enjoy from the bottling and for a long time.
