Salanques /2004

Balance, intensity and purity. Transmits the authentic character of Priorat.

  • GRAPE VARIETIES: 65% Grenache, 20% Carignan, 5% Syrah, 5% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon
  • SOILS & VINES: Salanques vineyards are situated at a height of 350/450 meters above sea level on hillsides of pronounced slopes, with the characteristic slate soil called "licorella". Wine elaborated with Grenache and Carignan of old vines between 70 and 90 years, as well as younger vines for varieties of Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet and part of those of Grenache.
  • VINTAGE AND CLIMATE: The first months of the year were cold and caused a significant delay in the onset of the vegetation of the vines. The rainfall before flowering helped the recovery of plants. Once the grape was formed, maturation and growth conditions were optimal.
  • AGEING: The elaboration process followed temperature-controlled fermentation with a total maceration period of about 3/4 weeks. The ageing was of 14 months in French oak.

The 2004 Salanques is the second wine of Mas Doix made from barrels not making the cut for Costers de Vinas Viejas. It is 65% Garnacha, 20% Carinena, and equal parts Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon aged 14 months in French oak. Inky purple, the wine has a lovely perfume of mineral, truffle, pencil lead, kirsch, black currant, and blueberry. Ripe and full-bodied, the wine has a velvety texture, superb depth, and gobs of flavor. Drink this pleasure-packed wine over the next 8-10 years. Drink: 2007 - 2017.

It had an absolutely fabulous bouquet of black currant, blueberry, pencil shaving and iodine aromas. It was full bodied and very smooth on the palate with black currant, red currant, blueberry and mineral flavors...absolutely delicious! This also had a very long (60+ seconds) and impressive finish. I really enjoyed this. It was terrific.

Ruby-red. Vivid aromas of raspberry, strawberry, red licorice and exotic baking spices. Explosive red berry flavors are suave, sexy and almost sweet, but there's just enough acidity and fine tannins to ensure focus and lift. The fruit builds on the rich finish, which features a liqueur-like strawberry quality that manages to retain freshness. Captivating and flat-out delicious.
